What topic could we discuss other than Obon?
Every year, the community comes together to plan, construct, create, cook, share, dance, play, and celebrate. The dedicated leadership and volunteering that are essential to Obon are always impressive to experience.
This year in particular, we were creative and explored new ideas, including corporate sponsorship and exciting new food items. While we shift and grow, we continue to honor our values and prioritize building community while fundraising for the temple.
Rev. Candice Shibata delivered a powerful message at the Hatsubon Service inviting our ancestors to return home to be remembered and celebrated.
In that spirit, it is no surprise that one of our main Obon fundraising sources is the virtual lanterns that donors dedicate to their loved ones who have passed. Additionally, we created a small memorial wall where attendees could hang lanterns during Obon itself. These opportunities appear to strike a chord with new and returning Obon attendees and many heartfelt dedications were displayed online and in person (including the lantern pictured here).
I would like to express my deep appreciation for all of our Sangha and extended community whose labor and attendance bring MVBT Obon to life every year.
In Gratitude,
Julie Satake Ryu
MVBT President
