Resonated With & Valued the Many Principles of Buddhism

By Jason Lai

Good Morning, Everyone,

Growing up, I’ve had a different connection to the Temple than many others here have. I didn’t have any family that grew up here, nor did I go to Dharma school when I was quite young. I remember going to service a few times when I was in elementary and middle school, but I struggled to find a connection. I was skeptical and didn’t know what being Buddhist entailed.

I further recall a time when I prayed with my grandfather. We were praying at a miniature statue of Buddha in his living room, and he asked me if I had seen that the statue had a glowing aura around it. I tried my best to give a scientific explanation that the aura was the light reflected off the statue. However, he told me I was wrong and that the light was a halo that represented the Buddha’s spiritual power.

That was the day when my perspective shifted. Seeing so many people believe in and practice Buddhism struck me with awe and inspiration. I decided I wanted to fully explore Buddhism.

When I started high school, I sought to go to service and become more involved with the Temple. I admired the sacred and peaceful space, absorbing the harmonic and calming sutra chants combined with the Reverend’s wise words. When I followed the other kids to Dharma School and learned more about the Buddha’s teachings, I realized that I deeply resonated with and valued the many principles of Buddhism. The Temple became a sanctuary where I could learn, grow, and reflect.

This experience was elevated when I joined YBA. I was able to build personal relationships with many friendly people who welcomed me into the community, from the advisors to the members. Going on trips, conferences, or having random hangouts with them turned into memories that I deeply cherish. Most importantly, through YBA, I was able to embody the Buddhist teachings I was learning because I was giving back to the community that welcomed me. I’m going to miss being a cashier at our Obon Hotdog Booth, checking in a never-ending wave of people at spaghetti dinner, and my weekly trips to the bank as treasurer.

To the YBA members and advisors that I have met, I want to thank you all for supporting me and being some of the kindest people I have ever met. To the Sangha, I want to thank you all for inspiring me with your joy, faith, and compassion.

Transitioning to college, I will continue to practice Buddhist teachings that I’ve learned here at the Temple. They have nurtured an open mind and moral framework for me to strive for. With each step I take forward in life, I will always remember my time at the Temple, as it built the foundation of my faith and the person I want to be in the future.

Thank you for listening.
